if airlines sold paint …

Buying paint from an airline…
Customer: Hi, how much is your paint?
Clerk: Well, sir, that all depends.

Customer: Depends on what?
Clerk: Actually a lot of things.
Customer: How about giving me an average price?
Clerk: Wow, that’s too hard a question. The lowest price is $9 a gallon, and we have 150 different prices up to $200 a gallon.
Customer: What’s the difference in the paint?
Clerk: Oh, there isn’t any difference; it’s all the same paint.
Customer: Well, then, I’d like some of that $9 paint.
Clerk: Well, first I need to ask you a few questions. When do you intend to use it?
Customer: I want to paint tomorrow, on my day off.
Clerk: Sir, the paint for tomorrow is the $200 paint.
Customer: What? When would I have to paint in order to get the $9 version?
Clerk: That would be in three weeks, but you will also have to agree to start painting before Friday of that week and continue painting until at least Sunday.
Customer: You’ve got to be kidding!
Clerk: Sir, we don’t kid around here. Of course, I’ll have to check to see if we have any of that paint available before I can sell it to you.
Customer: What do you mean, check to see if you can sell it to me? You have shelves full of that stuff; I can see it right there.
Clerk: Just because you can see it doesn’t mean that we have it. It may be the same paint, but we sell only a certain number of gallons on any given week. Oh, and by the way, the price just went to $12.
Customer: You mean the price went up while we were talking?
Clerk: Yes, sir. You see, we change prices and rules thousands of times a day, and since you haven’t actually walked out of the store with your paint yet, we just decided to change. Unless you want the same thing to happen again, I would suggest that you get on with your purchase. How many gallons do you want?
Customer: I don’t know exactly. Maybe five gallons. Maybe I should buy six gallons just to make sure I have enough.
Clerk: Oh, no, sir, you can’t do that. If you buy the paint and then don’t use it, you will be liable for penalties and possible confiscation of the paint you already have.
Customer: What?
Clerk: That’s right. We can sell you enough paint to do your kitchen, bathroom, hall, and north bedroom, but if you stop painting before you do the bedroom, you will in violation of our tariffs.
Customer: But what does it matter to your whether I use all the paint? I already paid for it!
Clerk: Sir, there’s no point in getting upset; that’s just the way it is. We make plans upon the idea that you will use all the paint, and when you don’t, it just causes us all kinds of problems.
Customer: This is crazy! I suppose something terrible will happen if I don’t keep painting until after Saturday night!
Clerk: Yes, sir, it will.
Customer: Well, that does it! I’m going somewhere else to buy my paint.
Clerk: That won’t do you any good, sir. We all have the same rules.

SA Work permits – The current situation February 2012

If you are a Human Resources Manager for a large international company then you most probably will know what it means to apply for a work permit for one (or more) of your international staff members (and their families), coming from abroad to work at your firm for a certain period of time.

You will also know that it is – to say the least – a nightmare to get assistance from the South African Department of Home Affairs (DHA), which is unfortunately the only issuing authority in SA. The nightmare unfortunately continues, especially when you need to find out how and where to submit work permit applications for your foreign staff.

New Legislation:

New legislation that was recently passed by Government prohibits third parties to submit and follow up on any application that was submitted with the DHA on behalf of a client. This new legislation was not received well at all within the immigration and corporate sector, as it goes against our constitution which clearly states that anyone has the right to be represented.

This means that even Practitioners as well as Attorneys will no longer be allowed to have power of attorney on any application, which means that the applicants will henceforth be required to submit their own applications at the DHA as well as follow up on their applications for the outcome of it.

The DHA is aiming to follow in the footsteps of Australia as well as the UK where they require applicants to apply for the correct permit BEFORE entering SA. This also means that they will only take in new applications in SA in exceptional circumstances.
So if you entered SA on a business visa – for a look see for instance – and you decide to take the position at the new company in SA, you would have to exit SA and apply for the correct work permit from the SA Embassy in your home country, and then return to SA to start your new appointment with your new work permit.

The DHA always has huge backlogs, and to make matters worst, they moved their processing centre in December 2011. Any application submitted in SA can take between 6 and 8 months to be processed, which poses a huge problem far any Expat wanting to start work, open bank accounts, or just to get his container in from customs.

SA Sports packages

The South African football fans who spent thousands of rand on travel packages to the UK that never materialised are planning to take legal action against a Johannesburg travel agency.

Last week the Daily News reported that Dhanaseelan Naidoo, of Chatsworth, had paid for a trip for himself and his nine-year-old son, Kaylin, through SA Sports Packages to travel to the UK for two English Premier League games.

But when Naidoo arrived, he found that neither his accommodation, nor his tickets for the games had been paid for.

He then had to pay for his own accommodation at a hotel in Manchester – along with 50 other South Africans who had bought the same package.

To make a few comments who in their right mind would let a group of 50 people fly to the UK where no hotels are paid for and no game tickets are waiting for them. Certainly home that more comes out soon the story and that people who have been wronged are compensated.

50 people at R40 000 a person – this amounts to the tune of approximately R2 million rand. Guess someone has taken this a step to far and ended in a deep hole where they could not climb out. Liquidation is one thing however from the one sided stories I have read it seems that liquidation was started weeks before the trip? If this is so then shame on the owners and the way they have handled this.

With that been said I am sure we are going to see a few more agencies go down in the next few years, this will not be the last – so how does one protect yourself against this? Travel insurance ? Liquidity insurance ? or does the passenger now have to call and confirm arrangements prior to leaving from SA? ? Why ? why should they ? is this not why you go through and agency or a tour operator to start with?

We will investigate options and provide solutions and hints and tips to all travellers within the days and weeks to come.
