Volcanic eruption in Iceland: Disruption to flights 15 April 2010 ( Update 09.45 )

A volcanic eruption in Iceland has created an ash cloud that is currently travelling in an easterly direction. As a result, restrictions by UK National Air Traffic (NATS) are in place.

All departrues from LHR, LGW and LCY will be cancelled for the rest of the day from 1130 UK time (all UK domestic flights have already been cancelled for today)

This applies to all airlines

Some flights from the USA (BA292/296/68) have been night stopped and others already airborne may be diverted (BA228/192/264/188).

Further disruption is likely as a second eruption has occurred in closer to Finland and Russia.

The most reliable and up to date information regarding disrupted flights can be found on the arrivals and departures information on ba.com as the situation is likely to change through out the day.

A commercial policy is in place which will allow customers to rebook or refund. The details are outlined below:

Advice for customers/agents
If a customers flight is cancelled then the following options are available to them

Rebook onto an available flight to the same destination within a 3-day period before or 14-day period after the scheduled departure time of the original flight. If the same booking class is not available, the next lowest class may be booked within the same cabin. This will be at no additional cost to the customer, and if required, the validity of the ticket may be extended.

or

Rebook onto a flight to the same destination at a later date in the same booking class and cabin. The flight must be re-booked and travel must take place within the validity of the original ticket purchased. This will be at no additional cost to the customer.

or

Refund the ticket purchased to the original form of payment.

It was great to see this week how ready and helpful the airlines can be and the lengths they can go to to assist passengers. Here is one example:

“In light of the resumption of its service between Hong Kong & Bangkok, CX announced that the special flight it is operating on Friday to & from Utapao Airport, south of Bangkok, will instead operate to & from Bangkok. Arrangements will be made for pax already booked on this special flight to return to Hong Kong on one of the airline’s flights from Bangkok.“

Dozens of airlines this week rerouted flights, cancelled flights or delayed them. Most airlines also offered free changes and no refund charges for clients who were delayed or were not going to travel.

Well done to the airlines this week great job guys!
