Travel Insurance Consultants (TIC) has introduced local travel insurance for South Africans travelling within South Africa, which provides a number of important benefits*. Travel always involves risk, and this applies equally to local trips as to journeys abroad. This is why it is important to consider the benefits of buying domestic travel insurance for local travel.
• The Cancellation and Curtailment cover (with a limit of R10 000) is a valuable benefit for any traveller should they have to cancel or curtail their holiday as a result of sudden illness or accident or death.
• TIC also provides R10 000 for Burial Expenses in the event of your death while on holiday.
• If you hire a car while on holiday, and have an accident, you will be held liable by the car rental company for the excess, which can be very high. Along with the stress of dealing with such a traumatic event would be the added worry of financial loss looming over your head. TIC’s local travel insurance policy has a Car Rental Excess Waiver (with a limit of R10 000) which will protect clients from having to pay high excesses should they be involved in an accident.
• TIC also provides a Car Hire benefit of R250 a day, which can go a long way to absorbing the cost of finding other forms of transportation, should your car break down while you are on holiday.
• Should you require Medical Transportation and Evacuation to hospital, TIC’s local travel insurance policy will cover you for these costs.
• Should you be hospitalised on a journey for at least 24 hours, TIC will pay you a daily inconvenience benefit of R2 500 for each complete 24 hours you remain in hospital.
Local travel insurance will cover you for all these events, as well as providing a host of other important benefits. Taking out a policy will put your mind at rest and is the perfect solution for the careful South African traveller.

Travel Guard is aware of the civil unrest in Egypt and the impact it has had on our clients who are currently in Egypt and those who were planning to travel to Egypt.

Please note that clients who booked their journeys prior to the media warning (25th January 2011) of the situation in Egypt are covered for cancellation, curtailment and travel delay.

Cover will automatically be extended up to the 16th of February 2011 for all the clients that are currently stranded in Egypt and cannot leave due to the non availability of flights.

If the client booked their journey after 25th of January, then no cover is applicable for cancellation

Well one thing that certainly is topical at the moment is the World Cup 2010 – if you plan renting out your house or leasing you car please confirm with your insurance company for what you are covered for and where you are not to safe gaurd yourself, family and your properties. Here are some snippets as an example from Out Surance:

Contents and Building cover
Theft from your house
• If you lease your house to tenants, you are covered for theft if it is burgled as long as there are visible signs of forced entry that the house was broken into. There is no cover if the tenants steal your goods.
• If you have guests staying with you in the house, their personal possessions are covered under the Contents section if they are stolen from your home. Their possessions are covered to a maximum amount of R5000.
• Your guests should ideally have their own cover though. They would need All Risks cover that they have arranged with insurers in their own countries. All Risks covers their personal possessions (e.g. their clothing, luggage, cameras and other valuables) which they have with them anywhere in the world.
Liability cover
If my guest or tenant is injured while staying at my property, can I be held legally liable?
Your standard liability cover ensures that you are covered if you are legally responsible for the death of or injury to your guests. However this liability cover does not apply to your tenants and you will need our Business Liability cover so call us on 08600 70 000 to find out more.
What is the difference between a guest and a tenant ?
Guests are those who stay with you and are not paying you for their stay whereas tenants are those who pay you an agreed amount for the accommodation or living expenses; typically you will have entered into a lease agreement or contract with them for the duration of their stay in your property.
World Cup Tickets
Am I covered if I lose my World Cup tickets?
Tickets and personal documents are not covered.
If you do lose your tickets log on to www.fifa.com to read about FIFA’s ticket-replacement policy.
Vehicle cover
Am I covered if I lend or lease my car to one of my foreign guests or tenants?
Yes you are covered if the driver has a valid licence in the country of issue or an International Driving Permit (IDP).
There are specific requirements in place that govern foreign drivers and the validity of their licences for the duration of the World Cup. Foreign drivers need an IDP if they are visiting SA for more than 3 consecutive months.
If your visitor is staying here for a shorter time period, their driver’s licence must:
• be valid in the country of issue and comply with the minimum requirements in terms of the road traffic laws of that country
• be printed in English or a translated copy certified by the driver’s Embassy / Consulate in English will be accepted
• the licence holder’s photo must be on the licence
• all licences will be accepted to operate equivalent vehicles on SA’s roads
• no professional driving – i.e, transporting fair paying passengers, unless a Professional Driving permit is issued in SA
If they will have exclusive use of your car for more than one month over the duration of the World Cup they will have to be noted as the regular driver of that car on your OUTsurance facility. If they will drive the car occasionally or for a shorter period, there is no need to change the regular driver details.

Not this will vary from policy to policy and company to company – so double check!

Travel insurance is really an intricate part of your holiday planning. We have seen cases where people have put in claims of excess of R100 000. If one did not have travel insurance then they would need to sell their houses to pay the medical bills and it can happen in the blink of an eye.

If you are one of your off spring are going to travel for a year then please take out travel insurance it is imperative. You can take a policy for the whole year at very reasonable prices. If you are going for business there is a special business cover which costs aprox ZAR40 a day. (Minimum of 6 days cover) Can you afford to be with out it?

Some interesting points on travel insurance:

The credit card insurance is valid for a maximum of 90 days, this is not expendable.

You must take out travel insurance before you depart your home country.

Certain medical aid travel insurance do not cover repatriation so please check what is covered.

It is mandatory to have travel insurance for certain visas.

You cannot extend your travel policy after it has expired.

Make sure the policy you choose has baggage cover as on certain policies it is an EXTRA.
